Often referred to as Brazilian, or Gaucho (Brazilian cowboy) style food, churrasco barbecue began as a method of rendering tough cuts of beef into more tender cuts.

A churrasco barbecue is a small brick fireplace about shoulder high. You build a small fire of wood charcoal (not the kind of charcoal you normally buy) under a rotisserie, with spits at various heights above the fire.

Churrascos are becoming very popular around the world, with restaurants(called churrascarias) and restaurant chains specializing in this style of cooking popping up everywhere. Homes everywhere are building churrascos into their outdoor kitchen and patio designs. Always popular in South America, this barbecue cooking style can be found throughout Asia, Europe, and North America.

In today’s world, a churrasco barbecue works well with all store-bought cuts of meat, including the quality cuts, which end up very tender and juicy.

A churrasco cooks a little differently than the rotisserie over a grill that Westerners normally use. It has the added dimension of heat that radiates from the brick walls. This creates kind of an “oven effect”, where the meat is being cooked on all sides at once. In other words, even the side of meat facing away from the fire is being cooked. This radiant heat helps seal in the juices evenly. Surprisingly, very little of the juices from the meat actually drip into the fire and coals.

How a modern churrasco is usually set up is to have the lower rotisserie spits rotate mechanically, while the upper ones are turned by hand. There are even inserts you can buy that are fit to slide into the churrasco opening.

Before cooking, the meat is usually seasoned with sea salt or garlic, and cooked slowly over the fire. Various marinades can also be used.

Beef is not the only cut of meat used in a churrasco barbecue. Pork, chicken, goat (cabrito), and sausage (linguica,a spicy Brazilian sausage), are all regularly used, and with excellent results. Very lean wild game works well also, since a churrasco helps keep in most of the fat and juices.

Unlike the barbecue grill normally used, a churrasco barbecue makes it possible to cook several large cuts of meat at once. This makes it perfect when cooking for a large number of people. Since it is such a slow cooking method, even the cook gets to relax and enjoy the party.

Accompaniments for the cooked meat include garlic sauce, limes, and olive oil. Chicken and pork tastes wonderful when drizzled with a little olive oil and a squeeze or two of lime juice. For churrasco barbecues, it’s the simple ingredients that create the wonderful flavors.

Brazilian Bbq Grill

Grillex is based on the ultra-popular Brazilian barbecue cuisine that has fed gauchos and cowboys for centuries. Grillex introduces a modern day twist to this famed outdoor grilling style by bringing it indoors, creating a “social cooking” experience for friends and families around the world. Grillex brings the mouthwatering flavor and aroma of Brazilian barbecue to your home. Grillex is placed over a burner and inside this patented cooker, food is placed on skewers and in baskets suspended vertically around the heat source. A circular diffuser in the base of the Grillex evenly convects the heat creating a perfect environment for cooking any variation of meats, vegetables, fruits and more. A full meal can be served in less than 20 minutes. Grillex boasts portability as well as ease of use, making it perfect for the outdoors as well… from special events to backyard gatherings, tailgating and camping. Grillex can be used on virtually any burner, from your kitchen stove, backyard barbecue grill to your camp stove. Your friends and family are going to love gathering around the Grillex, eagerly creating their own skewer of grilled perfection. It’s not just a grill, it’s Grillex!

Inspired by traditional Brazilian barbecues, this portable barbecue grill makes it easy to bring the authentic taste of outdoor cooking indoors. To use, place the unit over a gas-stove burner or a portable camping stove; the gas flame enters through a circular opening in the base of the unit, then moves through a diffuser to evenly heat the food inside. One pair of double skewers, five standard skewers, and a chrome-plated grill basket come included. Simply load food into the basket or onto the skewers and hang vertically inside the grill for cooking with the option to rotate with a quick turn of the stay-cool handle. The grill can be used to cook up anything from steak, chicken, and fish to carrots, onions, peppers, and more. Best of all, it serves up to eight people at a time, cooking almost 4-1/2 pounds of meat in less than 20 minutes. When used outside, a piece of charcoal can be placed in the heat diffuser to create the smoky flavor of an authentic outdoor barbecue (do not use charcoal for indoor cooking). Other highlights include a catch basin at the bottom to catch all meat drippings, an aluminum upper body and lid with an electrostatic painted finish, stainless-steel heat diffuser and skewers, and Bakelite handles that stay cool to the touch for comfortable handling and safe transport. When finished, the unit disassembles for quick cleaning by hand or in the dishwasher. A fun addition to any party or gathering with family and friends, the portable barbecue grill measures approximately 14 by 18 by 16 inches.

<img src=http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/kitchen/detailpages/smallappliances/grillex-main.gif The Brazilian barbecue phenomenon has exploded, but so far it’s been limited to a restaurant experience. Grillex brings that same delicious taste into everyone’s kitchen. Whether entertaining a group of friends or just spending some quality time with the family, the versatility of Grillex offers plenty of options for every household. It’s simple, fast, and flavorful every time, making it the perfect product for any kitchen. Appetizers, dinner, and dessert–the possibilities with the Grillex are truly endless.

Grillex comes with five cooking skewers, a double skewer, and a basket that, after being prepared with meats, vegetables, and fruits, are suspended upright around virtually any heat source, such as stovetop burners, outdoor grills and camping stoves. A center diffuser provides even heat displacement to create the ideal environment for cooking various foods.

The Versatility of Grillex (It’s Not Just for Brazilian BBQ)

While the origin of the Grillex is Brazilian, the versatility of the Grillex is unmatched. In addition to the traditional Brazilian fare, Grillex can also be used to cook a wide range of foods: appetizers, simple or gourmet meals, desserts, and more. Below is a partial listing of the recipes developed for the Grillex that go beyond the typical meats, vegetables and cheeses of a Brazilan BBQ:

Appetizers

  1. Bacon wrapped Scallops
  2. Prosciutto Wrapped Stuffed Mushrooms
  3. Soft Pretzel Twists

Fast & Easy

  1. Grilled Herbed Broccoli
  2. Grilled Quesadillas
  3. Heavenly Chicken Nuggets
  4. Bratwurst
  5. Tequila Lime Beef
  6. Turkish Style Kabobs
  7. Grilled Teriyaki Skewers
  8. Ranch Roasted Potatoes
  9. Hot Dogs/ Polish Sausage–with a twist

Gourmet

  1. Green Chile and Lime Carne Asada
  2. Honey Shrimp and Turkey Sausage
  3. Mango Pork Tenderloin
  4. Orange Pineapple Chicken
  5. Peasant Lamb with Herbs
  6. Goat Cheese Stuffed Pork
  7. Roasted Fingerling Potatoes
  8. Blackened Portabellas with Tzatziki
  9. Crab Stuffed Chile Rellanos
  10. Garlic and Thyme Potatoes
  11. International Corn Husk Kubideh

Desserts

  1. Grilled Dessert Pineapple
  2. Bananas Foster sans alcohol
  3. Honeyed Greek Achladis
  4. Cherry Cream Pastry
  5. Chocolate Cream Pastry

Another benefit of the Grillex is that more than one type of food can be prepared and cooked all at the same time without taking a chance on the mixing of flavors–try that in a rotisserie! A perfect example of this is cooking two skewers of Soft Pretzel Twists while also grilling four skewers of Turkish Style Kabobs and rounding this out with two more skewers of bananas for Bananas Foster. Only in the Grillex can you cook all these at once without the mixing of the flavors. Not only does this make for great tasting meals, it’s also efficient.

No Smoke and Easy to Clean

<img src=http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/kitchen/detailpages/smallappliances/grillex-top.gif Other makers of indoor grills have tried to make one that doesn’t smoke, but only Grillex is truly smoke free. The patented design of the Grillex keeps the juices from dripping on the heat source, eliminating the smoke. The best part about the Grillex is that you are actually cooking over a real flame, just as you would on an outside barbecue. The Grillex sits right on top of your existing gas range top.

Ask anyone what their least favorite part about cooking is and they’ll tell you its the clean up. With the Grillex, clean up is simple. When cooking with the Grillex, we recommend placing 1 cup of water in the base. This provides extra moisture to the food while cooking and makes for a simple clean-up. The water only comes in contact with the juices that drip from the food while cooking.

Combined with the non-stick coating on the base of the grill, clean up is a breeze. Simply poor out the water and rinse and the skewers and baskets can be placed in a dishwasher.

Take Grillex Outdoors or On the Go

Grillex doesn’t need to be kept in the kitchen; the Grillex can be taken anywhere. Another patented feature of the Grillex is the flavor bowl that is housed in the heat diffuser. When grilling outside, this feature allows for a piece of charcoal to be added just above the flame and below the food to give the extra-added flavor of cooking over a real wood or charcoal fire. Just as one would never bring a charcoal grill into the house, never place charcoal in the Grillex while cooking indoors as adequate ventilation does not exist in the home. The space saving design makes it simple to store the Grillex among pots and pans in a typical cupboard when not in use. When designing the Grillex, a great amount of thought was put into how the unit would be stored when not in use. The engineers wanted to give the most amount of space inside the Grillex to allow for cooking larger portions however, this also created the need for more space to store the grill. In the end, the engineers settled on a brilliant design for the upper body of the grill to turn upside down and nest inside the lower body for storage. The end result is the Grillex only needs a mere 5-1/2 inches of clearance on the shelf. <img src=http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/kitchen/detailpages/smallappliances/grillex-charcoal.gif

Great Materials, Built to Last

<img src=http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/kitchen/detailpages/smallappliances/grillex-parts.gif The majority of the Grillex is made of aluminum. Aluminum is lightweight so there is no need to worry about moving a heavy grill around the kitchen. The total weight of the grill alone is less than 4-1/2 pounds. Aluminum was also used because of its ability to evenly distribute the heat throughout the grill, which is also one of the Grillex patented technologies. The skewers are made of restaurant grade stainless steel. The handles on the skewers, basket, grill body, and lid are made of Bakelite, which provides years of use without degradation due to harsh conditions such as the heat from the grill or ongoing cleaning in a dishwasher. In addition, the handles were designed with ridges to help dissipate the heat when in use. In most cases, a hot pad is not necessary when using the handles.

5wonderful grilling device
By satified customer
This grilling device is everything the product description says and more! I bought it thinking I can make churrasco, but I’ve since made chicken tikka, Middle Eastern lamb kabobs and more. Everything so far has come out very tender and moist, and best of all, the cleanup is a breeze–no splatter at all! Anticipating that I’d probably need more than the 5 skewers provided, I ordered an extra set of 4 when placing my original order. Turned out it was a smart move on my part, very proud of myself! This piece of cooking equipment is definitely more than just a curious gadget, I will be using it over and over again, for sure.

5Excellent gadget
By S. N. Anderson
Got mine yesterday, used it for every meal except breakfast since. Marinate some meat, coat some veggies with olive oil and sprinkle with salt, throw it on the skewers when you’re ready, and 20 minutes later you’re eating! I was skeptical about feeding eight people, but if you use all the pieces it comes with, you really can cook about 4 lbs of meat, (well spaced cubes of chicken and beef) within the stated times.

I was also afraid to crank my gas all the way up to the “medium” specified as my burner generally runs hot enough to smoke up the house at that level, but if you follow the instructions (water in base), you won’t have any problems. I’ve even gotten brave and cranked it to high a few times (I love that char-grill flavor) and still no smoke, but I’ve been pretty vigilant about the water, refilling every hour or so at least.

Make sure to use the toothpicks included for veggies so they don’t slide off the ends, so far I haven’t really had a problem with meat slipping, but you never know, so throw ‘em on just in case. I break mine in half and sometimes they burn a bit, but still no smoke alarms yet. I thought it was kind of gimmicky when I first saw it, but I can see it becoming a standby for lower fat and still tasty cooking.

5I love it!
By Tammy
First night with the Grillex was way better than expected. It’s much easier than I thought and the recipe times are spot on.

I made the following:

Marinated chicken strips (sliced thin and then overnight marinated in Newman’s Sesame Ginger.) Skewered up. 8 minutes over medium plus heat and then rotated. Best, most tender chicken ever.

Pork loin. Marinated. (Basque sauce) Sliced and skewered. 10 minutes, rotated then like 8 minutes. Amazing!

Salmon in the cage. Lemon pepper and rosemary. Forgot the times but again, prepped perfectly.

Pros:

Easy to use. SUPER easy to clean. SUPER GOOD FOOD!

Cons: I wanted more skewers but it appears I can buy more.

This is a great gift if you or someone you know loves Brazilian BBQ but cant afford Fogo de Chao.
